Milestone #2

-- Status Update --
2009 VPPs:  302,267
SNE Pace:  50,187 AHEAD
Currently Playing:  Suikoden Tierkreis (Nintendo DS)

On Monday I cleared my second Milestone Bonus of the year, picking up $2.2k in free money from the Pokerstars VIP program. The first two days of April have seen some solid sessions, and while I haven't played a ton of volume I've run well and my winrate so far reflects that. Graph is below:

Earlier this evening I gave a short lecture on Renton's ABCD theorem to two of my informal students whom were by (to be fair one lives in the basement). I then did some hands on coaching with one of said students while he 12 tabled a profitable 25nl session. I will be once again staking him for a period of time and hopefully this arrangement ends up being +EV as the previous two with him have.

Finally, I should mention I'm around three quarters through Suikoden Tierkries, a series spinoff for the DS. Spinoffs tend to disappoint, but this one does not. It is quite possibly the best original handheld RPG produced to date (obviously, remakes of games like Chrono Trigger and FF6 for handhelds aren't fair competition). Looking forward to seeing how it ends.

Hi ronfar, would be interested in tuition, do you offer any? Price?

Many thanks, Richard.

Unfortunately I don't think I'd be comfortable coaching anyone I didn't know personally, nor would I be comfortable charging for said services.

If you are looking for help beating micro/small stakes, I'd recommend spending a lot of time on the Microstakes Full Ring forum over at 2+2. Learn as much fundamental theory as you can. Believe it or not it doesn't really matter if you run 20/15 or 10/8 preflop - what makes the real difference between solid winners and the rest is that the winners understand why they are taking any action (betting, calling, checking, etc).

Doing whatever is necessary to prevent tilt and maintain good focus is also key, but that is something one has to work out for oneself I think.

Good luck.

That was a good lecture I read Rentons ABCD therom before but it really sunk in when you went over it with me and Jesse. I've been applying it a lot post flop in c betting scenarios with much better success then previously. Hopefully this go around will be better off to a good start at least!

P.S. I still owe you and Sasha a dinner.

Hey Jason, thanks for replying. Fully understand/respect your decision on the coaching, i think deep down every player has to evolve on their own and adopt their own style...so i will try this!

I do have one question though...

I read ages ago in a post you used to play 6 max then moved to full ring. Was there a reason for this?

I have played 6 max and HU for ages and struggling to really make any headway and was thinking of jumping to full ring. I know rakeback would reduce whilst playing full ring so this has always put me off so to speak. But do you think its an easier, more profitable route?

Thanks, Rich

Re: 6max versus FR

My experience with 6max is actually quite limited, as when I was playing 6max in the past I was terrible.

In 6max you obviously have to deal with many more marginal decisions postflop. This is probably good for you in terms of building a better game, and if your goal is to one day be sitting at railheaven ($500/$1k blinds) then I'd recommend staying the course and focusing on 6max/HU play as much as you can.

I love FR because I'm able to play a ton of volume 24-tabling. Further, I think typical donkeys are at a larger disadvantage at FR then they are at 6max, because usually their biggest leak is playing too many hands preflop leading them to stacking off light against very strong ranges of the regulars, which is more of a sin at FR than 6max. However, FR won't put you in as many interesting situations postflop, and thus at some point if you want to make your way to true high stakes, 6max or HU experience is necessary.

good answer, finding 6 max hard to beat...maybe due to variance....in 5 weeks I am going full time for 6 months (unless i busto before!) to see what i can earn! gl, i read your post as a tool of inspiration...i think if ur going to beat poker you just gotta put in sick volume and ur a great example of that!
